Preliminary Task: College Magazine Analysis

The masthead is partially covered, this suggests that it is a popular College magazine and people already know what it says.

The colours used indicate that it is partially educational as well as for leisure. The font also suggests this, it is clear and bold.

The headlines also relate to both male and female.

The main image is a smart looking young person; he has his books from College. This implies that it meant to apply to anyone in College.

The student in the image has books named ‘Law and Society’ this suggests that he is well educated at that particular College and that that is a good College

It relates to both female and male students because in varies in colours.

Magazine Cover Analysis

The line under the Masthead is referenced to the genre of rap music.

This magazine looks like it is aimed at males with age 18-30.

The magazine has teen related headlines and therefore can’t be aimed at any other audiences. This particular magazine is aiming at males, this is because it has firearms, the word “blood and suicide” and these are not things that are that attracts female audience.
The bar code is in the corner and out of the way. This is so it doesn’t get in the way of the main picture or any headlines.

The magazine uses a lot of red. Red is used to symbolize violence, blood and hatred; these are the things that male teenagers enjoy in their magazines.

The tattoos indicated that he is a resistant and tough along with the shoulder muscles, and the gun symbolizes that he is weak under “The Game” - the main headline.
“Suicide is not an option.” This phrase could mean that the music of this magazine is very gripping and addictive.

This magazine looks like a Rap magazine; I know this because he has lots of tattoos and is wearing light clothing, e.g. tank top. Also because it has a grimy kind of look, unclean – smudged background.
This magazine cover is aimed at a teenage audience, I know this because of the violent atmosphere it has, and also the picture also suggests this because the man on the cover is holding a gun.

The man in the front cover covers up a little bit of the masthead; this suggests that is a well-known magazine.
The image could represent rap music; this is because rap is usually associated with violence. And the picture looks violent, e.g. the gun he is holding and the use of the colour red.

This magazine looks like it is aimed at males with the age of 18 -30 years of age.

The type of music that this magazine promotes has majority of the listeners that are teenagers. This is because teenagers appeal to this sort of music (metal and grime) and older men don’t. Therefore this magazine has to be aimed at teenage audience. Also it is aimed at males because it is an aggressive magazine and usually female audiences are more into non-violent magazines.

“Behemoth – all shall fall” this is the main headline and it is in a very metallic colour and gothic font, this could suggest that this is some kind of metal magazine
.

The face paint suggest that the guy in the front cover is a heavy musician and therefore does heavy type of music e.g. metal, heavy rock and rock. Also the dark colours suggest this as well
.

The bar code is in the corner and out of the way, in order for it not to get in the way of the images or the headlines.

The magazine is trying to get more viewers by giving out prizes for buyers e.g. the promises on the front cover of this magazine (win a guitar).

The use of slang in this magazine also looks like it is aimed at a teenage audience because it uses slang that normally the youth of today use. E.g. “sick sounds” and “wicked.”
The masthead sticks out due to the dark background colours; this is because it is not a very well-known magazine and is trying to gain more audience.
The magazine cover does not use much slang; this is another reason to why I think it is aimed at an older male audience.

The masthead is slightly covered by the front cover image; this suggests that the magazine is well known.
The style of the clothing suggests that this is aimed at an older audience. The audience is about 25 – 35 years of age.
The promise at the top suggests that it is after even more readers, but it’s not a big prize so it means that they already have many viewers.

The main headline “Julian goes solo” suggests that it has gossip, which people usually enjoy, about the famous artists.
The bar code is in the corner and out of the way. This is do it doesn’t get in the way of the headlines and the image.

There are about 3 colours which are used. The colours used (light brown) attracts more sophisticated people, probably middle class.
The person on the main image is looking straight at the viewer; this suggests that it is inclusive.

This looks like a male audience because of the dark colours used. Bright colours suggest a more feminine side.
